Acne plagues approximately 25 percent of adult men and 50 percent of adult women. Because of these figures, one is driven to wonder: does any adult ever get a chance to lead an acne-free life? Acne persists even until late adulthood. So even if one has reached thirty or forty years old, acne can still be a perennial problem.
Although acne is generally regarded as unpleasant and annoying, acne is supposed to last only until adolescence. As a result, adults who still possess acne are seen as worse off than teenagers who have acne. A bad acne case may lead to depression, low self-esteem, and social isolation. Acne is not an easy problem to solve, mind you. Every acne case is unique, in a sense that a cure for a specific acne case may not apply to other acne cases. Luckily, almost all adult acne cases can be cured.
Over the years, there have been theories regarding adult acne. Most have proposed that it stems from a hormonal imbalance, which is why adult acne can be treated through balancing out hormones. This has been pointed out as the reason why acne breaks out during menopause, menstruation, and pregnancy. The culprit hormone which is said to cause acne has been identified as androgen, a male hormone which can be found in both men and women.
Too much oil produced by this hormone can lead to the clogging of pores and hair follicles, which precipitates growth of bacteria and acne. Genetics also play a role when it comes to acne. In another study, 50 percent of women who develop acne as adults possess high androgen and testosterone levels, as well as lowered globulin, a blood protein.
Acne usually occurs when a skin pore is blocked. This prevents oil from escaping, and thus develops into full-fledged acne in a matter of days. However, it still remains unknown why acne develops only in certain pores, and not all pores. The accepted causes of acne include hormonal imbalance, bad diet, faulty genetics, deficiency in vitamins, and too much stress. In reality, a mix of all these factors may lead to the growth and development of acne.
In order to cure acne, then, it is important not to focus only on the causes, but on possible treatment as well. It has been proven that Benzoyl peroxide eliminates acne more effectively than anything else. Benzoyl peroxide does not come with any side effects, and can be administered with ease. It is perfect for lifetime use because skin does not develop any tolerance to this treatment.
So remember, the next time you think youre a lone sufferer of acne, or that youre just plain unlucky, think again- so many people are affected by acne. You should immediately consult your doctor, and inquire for hormonal-balancing or other medical treatments.
