Given todays frantic lifestyle the normal teenager leads, you may find that they do not have healthy eating habits. In between classes they could snaffle some chocolate from a vending machine or hit the local convenience store before going to their next activity. It is tough to keep a close eye on the way that your teenager may or may not be eating.
Teenagers today are very busy. They have many things that keep them on the go every day from sports practice to social events. It seems like they dont want to take time out to actually sit down and enjoy a delicious and healthy home-cooked meal with the rest of the family.
With the way that body image is portrayed today in the media, teenagers, especially girls, may also feel that if they eat too much that they will get gain weight. So sitting down at home for a full and wholesome meal may seem far less attractive than just grabbing a candy bar for a fast sugar rush.
The way teenagers eat is also affected by the many food fad myths circulating around in the media. They may not eat sugar because at one time, someone told them that sugar causes acne. Or, they may avoid salads because they believe the concept that ALL oils will do the same.
Whilst sugar and acne may be indirectly related to some degree, cutting out certain foods in their diet based on incorrect or incomplete information may not be such a good idea. You can just imagine what else that they may or not be eating based upon such food myths that they have picked up from who knows where.
So, what can be done to help your teenager?
There are numerous things you can do to help make sure that your teen is eating sensibly. You can provide then with a hearty lunch and wholesome snacks for in between activities. If they have an after school activity, try to prepare something they can have on the go.
Try to provoke at least a little thought as to what they are eating by reducing the junk food alternatives available to them around the house.
Try not to let them skip a meal. Eating three regular meals everyday will do more for them in maintaining high energy levels and good nutrition than anything else. This will also help them to maintain their desired weight, as junk food is high in calories and can cause weight gain.
Begin by buying sodas and flavored waters in low sugar form and progress to sugar-free. If you can ease them over the initial shock and complaining of drinking these products you will have helped them cut down their high calorie intake.
There are lots more things you can do. Before long, they will begin to just pop into your head. Persist. Without trying to apply pressure, attempt to instill a healthy attitude towards eating in your teenagers. Pressuring them too much could cause problems because they dont understand what you are trying to achieve or why.
They could think that you think that they are overweight, which in turn, would hurt their feelings. If you dont watch out for them, who will? There may not be much that you can do to help them get rid of acne; however, just keep in mind that what you are doing will help them to prevent heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes later in life.
The most important thing is to lead by example and eat sensibly yourself. After all by the time a child is a teenager the one thing a parent should have learned is that kids dont always do what you say but they usually will do what you do!
