Acne comes in many forms and can range from mild to severe. It’s found on different parts of the body, although facial acne is the most apparent. You can usually treat mild cases of acne yourself, however more serious cases are best handled by health care professionals like dermatologists.

The most common form of Acne is called Acne Vulgaris, which translates literally to “common acne”. This is the type that can cause blackheads, papules, pustules, whiteheads, cysts and nodules.

Blackheads form in pores that are partially blocked. The substance that actually causes oily skin – called sebum – along with dead cells and bacteria slowly drain to the skin’s surface. The black color occurs when the pigments in the skin are exposed to air. Blackheads can often take a long time to disappear.

Papules are small red-colored bumps on the skin’s surface. They’re usually tender to the touch and irritating, but it’s important not to squeeze them or even touch them if possible. Squeezing them or touching them excessively can lead to aggravation and ultimately scarring.

Pustules are what is common known as pimples or “zits”. They look like a red circle with a center that’s yellow or white.

Whiteheads differ from blackheads in that they are contained underneath the skin’s surface. These are caused by pores that are completely blocked, trapping the sebum, dead cells and bacteria beneath the surface of the skin.

Nodules are quite a bit bigger than most other forms of acne. They’re hard lumps underneath the skin’s surface, which are usually quite painful and can last for weeks or months. Nodules are very prone to causing scarring, so it is wise to see a dermatologist for treatment before the scarring can occur.

Cysts are very similar to nodules with the exception that they’re filled with pus. Cysts are usually quite painful and will often lead to scarring if they’re left untreated. As with nodules, it’s best to see a dermatologist for treatment.

Acne, always the mysterious skin condition occurring for no apparent rhyme or reason, often strikes back after you cross 30 and think that the days of your hiding your pimple-covered face are far over. Although much rarer than teenage acne, adult acne can attack all of a sudden. Not only is it an embarrassing skin disorder, it can wreck havoc with your social life if you are unfortunate enough to suffer from a terribly vicious attack. Although no concrete, individual cause for acne has been established, some of the reasons why your acne can reappear after 30 years of age are:

1. In women, pregnancy is one of the major cause for the recurrence of acne in later age. It has also been observed that many women tend to suffer from acne during their menstrual periods. This is largely because of the hormonal changes that accompany these events.

2. Adults usually are on far more medications that teenagers or young people below 30. These medications often have side effects because of their strong chemical composition that can throw your hormones in disarray. Anabolic steroids, lithium, ant-tuberculosis drugs, anti-epileptic drugs, etc. are often the causes of acne in adults.

3. Stress. Again, adults are usually under far more stress than children, managing their family, social life and work. If you are constantly under stress, there is a good chance you will develop acne and other skin conditions.

4. Metabolic changes that occur with adulthood. As you reach adulthood, your metabolism tends to slow down and the hormonal conditions in your body alter along with it. This is particularly true if you have a sedentary job and are not physically active. These metabolism changes and the accompanying changes in your hormonal balance can cause a recurrence of acne.

Acne is a skin disease that affects more than 17 million individuals in the United States alone. Three out of four teenagers suffer from some form of acne. The possibility of severe psychiatric and psychological complications affects many individuals suffering from acne, while affecting a person’s quality of life in a negative manner. Psychiatric and psychological complications are not a serious problem for many of the individuals suffering from acne, but there are enough individuals with these conditions to be alert to the symptoms. This is not a disease that limits itself to the skin only.

If you are suffering from severe acne, be alert to the following symptoms. Seek medical help if you recognize any of these symptoms in your life.

Depression

Depression caused by acne affects how you feel, think, and act. There are many symptoms of depression with the most common being:

> A change in appetite that results in weight loss

> Sleeping a lot or not sleeping at all

> Tired all of the time

> Irritable

> Having a feeling of worthlessness

> Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

> Thoughts of suicide

You may become depressed when your acne is severe, causing scars and not responding to treatment. You should share with your doctor how your acne has affected you emotionally.

Social Phobia

Acne may cause you to become so excessively self-conscious that you fear being around other people. The symptoms of social phobia are an overwhelming anxiety of fear that others are looking at you and judging you. Embarrassed or humiliated by your looks will interfere with everyday activities. Dreading and worrying about upcoming events in your life will take a toll on your health.

Social Phobia is not something that is easily controlled by you. Please share with your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.

Anxiety Disorders

Severe acne can lead to stress, which in turn leads to anxiety disorders. As with social phobia, anxiety disorders have many of the same symptoms. The important factor to remember is that it is treatable and if not treated can lead to poor performance in school, poor social skills, and you are more vulnerable to substance abuse.

As a teenager, social anxiety disorder resembles severe shyness and may not be recognized as a problem. The symptoms of social anxiety are an intense fear of social interactions, avoiding friends and conversations, looking down while speaking to someone, isolating yourself from others, excessively concerned with what others think about you.

Impaired self-image and self-esteem

Are you constantly putting yourself down? Society today is all about the perfect look. The problem with this view is that no one has the perfect look. As a teenager your body is changing rapidly with many hormonal changes affecting your entire body. Acne is a result of some of those changes. You may not be responding to treatment and have allowed yourself to think less of yourself than you should. There are so many internal and external factors in developing a healthy self-esteem.

You are in control of your self-esteem. There are many good things about yourself and you need to concentrate on those attributes instead of those areas that you are not happy with. You may need to talk with your doctor if you feel that you are unable to develop a healthy self-esteem on your own.

Social Dysfunction

Social dysfunction is the umbrella of all of the above conditions. If you are suffering from severe acne and find yourself retreating from others and suffering from the symptoms of depression, it is important that you consult your doctor immediately. Acne is not always a skin disease; it can turn into a psychiatric and psychological disease. Stop it before your quality of life is affected.

Life with acne is not always an easy life. If you are not careful it may reduce your quality of life. When your acne becomes more than you can handle emotionally, your quality of life deteriorates. Acne controls you when it all you think about.

Gaining control may not be easy for you. Seek help when your emotional life is in turmoil. If you are a teenager, your parents may not understand how you feel and may not sympathize with you. If you are an adult suffering with adult acne, you are at greater risk of suffering from these symptoms.

Your first step toward a better life with acne is getting professional help when you are suffering from any of the symptoms in this article.

Once in a lifetime or more so often we face a time when we come across acne. This is very embarrassing and frustrating. First thing that comes to mind is to go out and buy everything at the store to clear those unwanted pimples. Before you do here are some tips that could help and even prevent it from reoccurring.

1. When faced with a pimple do not pop it; this will only spread the infection and make it worse. By popping the pimple could result in a scar later on.

2. Clean your face with a salicylic acid in the troubled areas.

3. Benzoyl peroxide is proven to be the most effect non-prescription acne treatment available. I would recommend starting with 5% rather than 10% because it is just as effective and will lower the risk of your skin being excessively dry or peeling.

4. Water is the miracle cure; by drinking eight twelve ounce glasses a day can clear your skin fairly quickly.

5. Do not touch your face, which is hard to do, however, the bacteria from your hands and fingers will get into your pores and clog it.

6. DON’T overdo it on the over the counter products which your skin will hate and become irritated. Your skin will get inflamed, dry and peel excessively which will lead into more breakouts.

Here are six ways to quickly clear your acne and prevent it from coming back; which I have learned through experience. Acne can be an ongoing battle, however with the right knowledge and tools you can stop it in its tracks.

Did you know that acne is considered to be the most widespread skin condition in the world? While its occurrence is most common amongst adolescents, men and women in their thirties and forties have also been known to suffer from acne. Adult acne then refers to acne that begins or continues in one’s adult years. It is not different from the acne of adolescence – it can be in the form of acne vulgaris, cystic acne, acne rosacea etc.
Adult acne has become fairly common, especially in women. Acne is caused by hormonal imbalance in the body. The male hormones responsible for triggering off teen acne are also at work in adults. For instance, adult acne can be seen in women going through menopause, when hormonal changes come about. As the body limits the production of estrogen, androgens, the male hormones responsible for acne, cause an excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Acne in adults can be caused by hormonal imbalances, vitamin deficiency, stress, drugs or more probably a combination of all these factors in varying degrees.
A severe form of acne called acne conglobata may result in permanent scarring of the skin. Other forms of acne such as chloracne, which is caused by chlorinated compounds, has also been seen in adults. Adults, especially women over the age of 30 can also get acne rosacea, in which the capillaries in the cheeks, forehead, and nose are swollen with blood, and the oil glands in the skin become infected. Underlying endocrine disorder in adults can reveal itself in the form of severe acne.
Like in teenagers, the bacteria that are present in the clogged pores, causes the skin to become red and inflamed and acne becomes visible in the form of papules, pustules and cysts. Adult acne can be found in people with combination or even dry and sensitive skins, as opposed to teenage acne, in which oily skin is fairly characteristic. Thus acne medications intended to treat teenage acne may not be that effective as they contain benzoyl peroxide, salicyclic acid and other ingredients that can be drying and cause irritation.
Care of skin inflicted with adult acne is similar to treating teen acne. One should gently clean the skin once or twice a day, as well as after heavy sweating, like after a workout to keep the pores clean and bacteria free. Make sure that the moisturizers, creams, sunscreens and lotions that you use are the oil free variety, that will not clog your pores. A balanced diet, a regular exercise routine and reduced levels of stress will all add to your physical well being and positively affect your acne.

Acne is also known as pimples. Generally this simple looking disease, which arrives so casually and unexpectedly, has clear cut intentions about your body. Any part could be its playground. It is capable of leaving cuts, scars and marks on the skin, if not controlled and properly treated, well in time. So, be highly alert, if you observe a swelling in your skin. Never try to experiment with it, arguing, ‘after all, it is my skin.’ Do not pop it.

Acne, whose scientific name is acne vulgaris, claims a fair share of adults, under its net. Adults have a wrong notion that it is the teenager’s malady only. It is not so. The prime reason of its occurrence, as quoted by Acne scientists and researchers, is that the skin pores get clogged causing the accumulation of fatty material from the oil gland or sebaceous gland.

Do all the pores get affected by acne? No!

Why? The reason is not known. Scientists and the researchers are on the job. Much is said and written on the subject of acne. But they are as unreliable as the myth- mongers. Only they claim their scientific right to revise their earlier ‘unassailable scientific findings’, which become their new truth. Remember, someone else is busy in another laboratory, to negate the former version about acne. The difference between the researchers and the myth-mongers is that the former get paid for their findings, whether assertion or denial, and the later are left high and dry.

So, you have to take a practical view about your acne, and take certain basic precautions, once you feel signals of its arrival. Try to identify first, whether you have blackheads or whiteheads. Observe and experiment with judicious approach and commonsense, when it comes to treatment. It differs from person to person.

The habit of popping up the acne, is certain invitation to the scars. Know whether your acne is inflammatory or non-inflammatory. The later ones are difficult to identify, and here you need to consult the dermatologist, without taking any chances with the standard over-the-counter medicines. Caution is better than inviting complications. Rememberer, you have to rebuild the skin broken by acne. Your selection of diet, the line of treatment and above all, your patience is going to be tested.

Acne is not just a problem that affects teenagers, many adults suffer with severe acne. Adult acne sufferers also have a higher percentage of developing depression or anxiety because of their acne condition. I am sure most adults who suffer from acne have had thousands of cures suggested to them from friends and family from medical procedures to rubbing oatmeal on their face in the morning. When acne is still a problem for adults the cause of the acne should be addressed first.

Some potential causes of acne in adults are stress, cosmetics, hormone imbalance and birth control pills. To combat these causes, adults usually need to alter their lifestyle. Stress needs to be reduced or eliminated, this is obviously hard to accomplish given the demands on adults these days. Take time during the day to decompress and try to relax for at least an hour per day. Change your brand of cosmetics or use less makeup. Makeup can block the pores and aloe the sebum to build up and cause breakouts. Change your birth control method if you feel this is the cause of your acne, your doctor should be able to recommend some other contraceptive that might be more suitable.

Now if the cause of your adult acne is a hormonal imbalance this will be much harder to correct but not impossible. There have been great strides made in recent years in the development of an adult acne cure. There are many programs that use all natural ingredients combined with specialized diets that can reduce or eliminate severe acne even if the cause is a hormone imbalance. Many of these programs can be investigated online or in your local naturopathic shop. I have personally seen some of the results of these natural programs and they are nothing short of incredible. Some can have results in as little as three days.

Adults should try the first few remedies before moving on to a natural cure or contacting a medical professional. Many times the cure is as simple as altering their lifestyle and changing to a different brand of cosmetics. But when the cause turns out to be a little more serious then that adults should seek treatment immediately to try and clear the acne before permanent scarring occurs. With natural remedies available that can provide an adult acne cure in as little as 3 days that is the route I would recommend first.

“Oh no, is that a pimple on my face? Icky, it is so gross! Oh I cannot face anyone ever again — I look hideous!”

Many teenagers around the world probably share this sentiment as they discover with horror their first pimple on their freshly scrubbed face. As teenagers enter into puberty, they are faced with new and exciting discoveries and challenges. Puberty though is also fraught with frustrations and changes, including physical changes in their bodies that often leave the teenagers with less than desirable pimples on the face.

Acne commonly occurs during the adolescence period. It is often caused by excessive secretion of oil from the glands. The typical acne lesions that appear on the face and body are comedones, papules, pustules and pimples.

Aside from the physical scar that acne leaves on your skin, it also inflicts an emotional toll, negatively affecting teenagers’ self-esteem and confidence. For some, acne can become so severe that they shun social contact, leading to social insecurity and sometimes even depression.

With the advanced acne treatments and acne products available today, acne need no longer have such a crippling impact on the sufferers’ life. Once the outward symptom of acne first becomes apparent, that is, inflammation and lesion on the skin, it is important that you treat it right away so as to slow down or stop further inflammation.

It is a good idea to pay the dermatologist a visit and to have the doctor recommend the best acne treatment for you. The treatment recommended will vary on skin type and also your age.

Acne can be treated much more effectively if it is treated along with acne products, be they over the counter or prescribed. There are numerous acne products sold over the counter currently for the prevention and treatment of acne, with many of these products scientifically proven to be effective in the treatment of acne.

In severe cases, it is best that you consult the dermatologist for advice and get a prescription for stronger acne products. These acne treatments and products require a higher degree of monitoring, as they tend to have more side effects.

The acne product recommended depends on the type and severity of the acne. There are acne ointments and acne creams containing benzyl peroxide to treat both mild and moderate acne. For more serious acne, there are topical antibiotics that kill the bacteria in the blocked follicles. For even more serious cases, oral antibiotics are effective. And for extremely severe cases, laser surgery can cut the root of the acne.

Aside from treating acne with products, a proper diet is also very important. Teens should avoid eating foods that are too oily, too spicy or too acidic.

So with all these acne treatment options available, you can rest assured that acne will never be an ugly and permanent fixture on your face. When acne rears its ugly head, do not let it ruin your life. With the right acne treatment and right acne products you can get rid of acne for good!
