The fish oil skin benefits are primarily due to the effect that omega-3 fatty acids have on inflammation throughout the body. Excessive inflammation plays a role in acne, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis and practically any condition that you can think of. The supplement may be beneficial for any of those conditions, because it reduces inflammation.

The supplement may also be beneficial for healthy individuals concerned about excessive dryness. One of the first symptoms of essential fatty acid deficiency is dry flaky skin.

For people that are getting a little older, there are other benefits. At least one study has shown a 10% improvement in firmness after three months of supplementation. Improved firmness means fewer wrinkles.

So, whether you are a teenager suffering from acne or a 40 something person wanting to avoid wrinkles, there are reasons to take the dietary supplement. The most heavily promoted benefits are to the health of the inside of the body, specifically to the heart and cardiovascular system. But, if you do a little digging, you will see that mountains of research have been conducted concerning the other health benefits. If you can only take one dietary supplement every day, fish oil is the best one to take.

Researchers have attempted to explain why there are fish oil skin benefits. At first, they believed that the effect was due only to lowering inflammation; that the omega-3s were not anti-inflammatories, per se, but that the hormones created from them were less inflammatory than those created from the omega-6s.

Later studies showed that increasing a persons omega-3 intake resulted in increased production of anti-inflammatory molecules within the human body. After supplementation, the immune system said now, its time to stop the inflammation.

Why this dietary component would be so important is still unknown. In other words, it is not possible to explain the fish oil skin health benefits completely. But, there are a number of scientific theories.

It is theorized, for example, that the hunter-gatherer diets of early populations were higher in DHA, better balanced in omega-6 to 3 consumption and lower in total saturated fat. This theory is supported by examining the diets of native New Guinea and other island populations, still living as they have for thousands of years, in which there is an absence of acne.

In addition to the fish oil skin benefits, some dermatologists are recommending the supplement for their teen-aged patients, because of the benefit to their emotional health. Acne, psoriasis and other skin disorders are often accompanied by depression. Research indicates that the omega-3s have some natural anti-depressant activity.

So, there are many reasons to invest in a supplement. It could help you look better and feel better too, particularly if your diet is not similar to the hunger-gatherer diet of days gone by.

Many of us have a love for good food. Resisting the foods that are bad for us is not always easy. Taking a supplement might help to counteract the negative effects of those bad foods. Of course, if there was only a single fish oil skin benefit, it would be worth the purchase price to most people.
